Jim Campos on “Sea Side”

The Sea Side Brand is among the most highly sought citrus labels from California. It is considered by some collectors to be the quintessential California fruit box label. There is a pretty girl in the foreground, frolicking in the surf on a clear, sunny day. Beachgoers relax and play in the sand. In the background, one can see a California mission and farther in the distance, an amusement park on a pier.

This version of the Sea Side Brand, despite coming out of the 1930-40s, is ultra rare. Equally rare, is an earlier version of the label showing two women and a child enjoying a day at the beach. Originally designed as a lemon box label it was also used for oranges. Parts of the painting at both sides had to be omitted in order to fit it into the measures of an orange crate label.

Truly surprising, is the fact that the Sea Side Brand labels described here are two of the only California fruit box labels showing people enjoying that most well-known of California activities, enjoying a day at the beach!

A decade later the packing company Oxnard Citrus Association used the brand Seaside once more for a lemon box label again trying to catch the mood at the seashore, this time without people only with a seagull over the surf and crossed by a giant diagonal lettering.
